Hugh Fairfax

Hugh Fairfax is a younger brother of Nicholas, 14th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and can trace his line of descent from the family of Thomas, 6th Fairfax, the Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia. The family once owned over 5 million acres of Northern Virginia and Fairfax County is named for them.

Although the Fairfax family have been English for over 100 years since Hugh’s grandfather returned there to re-claim the title, he has long been fascinated by the family’s forgotten American history and this book is the result of many years of absorbing research and re-discovery.

In October 2017, Hugh undertook a sell-out book tour of Virginia: Speaking locations included George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, The Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria, the home to many Fairfax forebears, Historic Blenheim in Fairfax, Virginia and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Virginia.

Hugh grew up near London and was educated at Eton College. Apart from writing about the family’s history, Hugh is a marine artist who exhibits regularly both at home and abroad.

Hugh lives in London with his wife Victoria, the well-known interior designer who was closely involved in the restoration of Skibo Castle, the magnificent Highland retreat of the famous American tycoon Andrew Carnegie. She is a regular guest lecturer at the Inchbald School of Design in London.

They have three children, Alexander, Laura and Marina and six grandchildren.

His book Fairfax of Virginia is published by Chiselbury and is available to buy here.
